About us

A small journal with
a long memory.

Motorkinet is an independent automotive publication about driving well and keeping cars alive. We publish ten features a year and would rather be useful than fast.

We started in a rented workshop with a borrowed camera and a rolling shell that never quite ran. The plan then was the same as it is now: write the kind of automotive journalism we wanted to read, without the press launches, the affiliate links or the breathless specifications.

What we publish

Ten long-form features a year, split between road craft, maintenance and car culture. Every piece is written by someone who has done the thing, or stood next to someone competent while they did it. If we have not driven the car or done the job, we say so.

We do not accept sponsored posts, and we do not run advertising. The journal is supported by readers who want it to keep existing.

What we believe

  • Driving is a skill. It improves with attention and degrades with distraction.
  • Maintenance is the hobby. The person who services their own car understands it in a way no review can convey.
  • Old cars are not sacred. They are best used, not preserved under a sheet.
  • Honest costs beat cheap ones. A truthful budget helps readers more than an optimistic one.
  • No paywall. Everything we publish stays readable.

How we work

Features are commissioned, driven, photographed and edited by a small group of contributors across Europe and North America. We fact-check specifications against manufacturer documentation and correct errors publicly when we get something wrong.

If you have a car, a road or a workshop worth writing about, the desk would like to hear from you.
